Adam-Philippe, Count of CUSTINE (1740–1793), a general, commanded the Army of the Rhine and later the Army of the North; he distinguished himself by defending Landau and capturing Mainz and Frankfurt; after suffering setbacks, he was accused of colluding with the enemy and guillotined. L.S., January 29, 1784; 1½ pages, quarto (enclosed engraved portrait). He received a visit from M. de Fougeret de Villandry, who embodied “everything I wished to encounter,” but his father instructed him to continue pursuing his chosen profession. Custine asks his correspondent to find him “an excellent subject”... The Chevalier d’Oïré, an engineer officer, found him a candidate at the school in Mézières, but he would prefer someone well-trained “to draw a plan from sight,” and “it would only be if I lost hope of finding someone like that that I would decide to accept someone who still has much to learn”...
