Pierre-Gaspard CHAUMETTE (1763–1794) Prosecutor of the Paris Commune, founder of the Fêtes de la Raison, arrested and guillotined along with the Hébertists. L.S., 28 Pluviôse II (February 16, 1794), to a National Agent; 1 page, quarto size, with letterhead and small vignette of the Paris Commune.
The law of 14 Frimaire II, establishing the revolutionary government, stipulated that laws would be read every decade in all the communes of France. However, the Committee of Public Safety was informed that several laws had not been read in some sections of Paris and “remain unknown to illiterate citizens,” having not been clarified through these “patriotic readings.” It therefore urges you to “have the law of 14 Frimaire read in your section next decade”—twice, in fact—and “each decade, the other laws as they reach you”…
