In the world of letters, Gabriel Frizeau (1870-1938) was first and foremost a friend of Francis Jammes and Paul Claudel. This double friendship was superimposed on that of André Gide. To this first generation must be added at least one more: Alexis Léger (Saint-John Perse), Jacques Rivière, François Mauriac, André Lafon, Carlos Larronde and Olivier Hourcade, all of whom frequented Gabriel Frizeau's residence at 17 rue de Régis in Bordeaux. The Frizeau collection included a dozen Gauguin works, notably D'où venons-nous? What are we? Où allons-nous?, forty or so Redons, twenty or so Lhotes, as well as works by Carrière, Monticelli, Maurice Denis, Maria Blanchard, Georges Rouault, Vlaminck and others. The archives of the Getty Center for History of Art in Santa Monica, California, preserve in their collection eighty-two letters from André Lhote to his friend and patron Gabriel Frizeau. In these letters, Lhote sends sketches of Gauguin paintings for sale and, often giving prices, recommends the purchase of works by Georges Rouault (1908-1910) ... Marc Chagall (1914), Cézanne (1917) Henri Matisse, ... Maurice de Vlaminck (1918) ....
