DADDI Bernardo (Attribué à)
Florence around 1290 - id. ; 1348. Christ on the cross with the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Saint John and a holy woman. In the upper part: The Annunciation. Tempera and gold background on softwood panel. Aureoles and gold background circumference stamped (some restorations, especially in the upper part). H. 58 - W. 38 cm (with the gilded wooden frame). Exhibition: On the reverse an old label of Chenu, exhibition of Turin Arte Sacra; Name of the lender Casali n° 29 Bernardo Daddi. "Christ on the cross plus saints". The handwritten mention on the label could refer to the important Arte Sacra exhibition in Turin in 1898. The Crucifixion reproduced here for its gothic structure is similar to the one of Bernardo Daddi in the Altenbourg museum with similar dimensions (Cf. Catalogue of the exhibition Les Primitifs italiens. La collection du musée d'Altenbourg. Bernardo Daddi, pp. 122 (reproduced) - 124 & 175 - Paris, Musée Jacquemart - André. March - June 2009). The position of the Virgin on the left, wrapped in a large blue drape, who seems to turn her head away from her son, recalls that of the Crucifixion in the Vittorio Cini collection (Wood. 74 x 33,2 cm), with its cross planted on a rocky element symbolizing Golgotha, and, as here at its base, the skull of Adam, following a very ancient tradition of medieval iconography (Cf. Dipinti Toscani e Oggetti d'Arte dalla collezione Vittorio Cini, n° 5, pp. 7 & 8; fig. 8 - Neri Pozza Editore 1984).
