The catalog indicates "After the death of Sébastien Erard, this portrait would have been sold by his nephew and successor Pierre Erard to avoid financial difficulties of the firm. Analogy: The Erard, Gaveau & Pleyel collection, formerly belonging to the Compagnie d'Assurance du Midi, then to the AXA Group, possesses a painted portrait, in all respects identical, of Sébastien Erard (Oil; 68 x 57 cm) preserved today in the Palais Lascaris, in Nice, as a copy of the XIXth century after J. L. David Famous musical instrument maker, Sébastien Erard (1752 - 1831) invented the mechanical harpsichord, perfected the harp and invented the grand piano.
