SWEBACH-DESFONTAINES Jacques François Joseph Metz, 1769-Pari - Lot 23
SWEBACH-DESFONTAINES Jacques François Joseph Metz, 1769-Paris, 1823 Le café Godet, Boulevard du Temple, sous le Directoire. Pen, black ink, grey, blue, yellow and red wash. Glued on sheet; pasted on cardboard (foxing and pitting, notably in the sky). Mounted with ink and gilt fillets and watercolour. H. 14,6-W. 29 cm Provenance: 1-Perhaps the drawing by Swebach-Desfontaines from the former collection of the Goncourt brothers, engraved by Jules Goncourt (Cf. Elisabeth Launay, Les Frères Goncourt collectionneur de dessins; n° 332, pp. 474 & 474-Arthena 1991). 2-Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Georges Duchesne commissaire-priseur; Féral Père et fils experts; Collection des Goncourt, 15-17 February 1897, n° 307 "The front is supported by wooden pillars lined with jalousie, and on the door we read: Café Godet. Men and women crowd to the open-air tables. In front of this café, an old man, a merchant of forgetfulness, small Savoyards" Watercolour. H. 0,14.-L. 0,28 cm) General Bibliography: Edmond and Jules Goncourt, History of the French Society during the Revolution; on the Café Godet, held by "The limonadier Godet (...) a hot patriot (who) obtained the rank of captain in the battalion of the Fathers of Nazareth" pp. 163-164 (Paris 1928). "A small drawing by Swebach, which represents him, does not give much idea of the outside luxury of a café of the Revolution. It is a rustic gallery on the ground floor, built of wood and topped with a tiled roof, largely lit by large windows with small panes. A canopy, supported on rough posts, lined with blinds, shelters the consumers. Bouquetières, forget-me-not sellers, and small hurdy-gurdy players line the surroundings" Analogy: Paris, Musée Carnavalet, Swebach-Desfontaines, Le café Godet, boulevard du Temple, sous le Directoire (21,5 x 30,5 cm) (Inv: D. 6083).
