The Simon Hantaï archive website tells us that the Catamurons series comes from "the name of a holiday house in Normandy".
Simon Hantaï gives this description: "the folding occupies only the central part of the canvas; the rest is left blank. The central rectangle, often folded several times, receives numerous superimposed coloured applications".
