The inside with the six-character Qianlong mark in zhuanshu in blue undercover. (Crack, ground edge, firing defect). H. 10.5 cm. Wooden base. CHINA - QIANLONG Period (1736 - 1795) Fine white porcelain stem bowl, adorned on the outside with three fishes in copper red. On the inside, blue underglaze Qianlong zhuanshu six-character mark. 清乾隆 釉裡紅三魚紋高足碗 Made during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, this bowl on pedestal is a quotation from a model of the Ming period, common during the reign of Emperor Xuande (r.1425-1435). Large orders for this type of bowl were made during the reigns of Yongzheng (r.1722-1735) and Qianlong (r.1735-1796), in homage to the Ming dynasty. In 1739, Tang Ying, superintendent of the Jingdezhen imperial factory, received a direct order from the court to produce copper red glazed vases 釉里红 youlihong. A similar bowl bearing a mark Yongzheng is preserved in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Ashmolean Museum. The complex work of copper oxide, which often turns grey on firing, was brought to a climax during the Ming Dynasty, notably through a change in the composition of the glaze. This bowl on a pedestal presents a so-called silhouetted decoration in copper red of three fishes floating on the porcelain bottom. Probably made using a stencil, it illustrates the technique of decoration in glaze developed during the reign of Xuande. This technique consists of introducing a second glaze under the main glaze before firing.
