Poetry Anthology: Prairie of the Gazelles. In Praise of Handsome Adolescents Ottoman Near East, Egypt or Syria, dated June 13, 1728 An interesting manuscript on paper: *Marati’ al-Ghizlan fi Wasf al-Ghilman* (The Meadow of the Gazelles: A Description of Handsome Adolescents) by Shams al-Din Muhammad b. Hasan b. ‘Ali al-Nawaji (d. 1455). 17 lines per page on laid paper in naskh script in black and red ink. Colophon dated 5 Dhu’l-Qa’da 1140 (June 13, 1728). Beautiful later binding with flaps and a havana-colored leather cover adorned with a stamped, multi-lobed mandorla with pendentives and decorated with plant scrolls. Inner cover boards lined with gray checkered geometric-patterned paper. In a havana-colored slipcase lined with paper matching the binding. (Condition: first few pages damaged, water stains, spots, small tears, not collated, slipcase damaged). Manuscript dimensions: 15 x 10 cm. Case dimensions: 15.5 x 10.5 cm. Thickness: 3 cm *The Meadow of the Gazelles: In Praise of Beautiful Adolescents* is a classic literary collection written by the Egyptian scholar Muhammad al-Nawâjî (1386–1455). It is a medieval guide to seduction, a poetry of desire. The text consists solely of very short poems. It was translated into French by René R. Khawam and published by Éditions Phebus in 1989.
