18th century FRENCH SCHOOL After Jean - François de TROY Paris 1679 - Rome 1752 Christ and the adulterous woman Black stone. Mark lower right of the Charles - Joseph - Barthelemy Giraud collection (1802 - 1881) (Lugt. 1143). H. 38 - L. 28 cm Early copy after a lost painting by Jean - François de Troy commissioned by Cardinal de Tencin (circa 1742) for the gallery of the archiepiscopal palace in Lyon. This drawing, which belonged to the Goncourt brothers, was the subject of a lengthy description by Edmond de Goncourt in La Maison d'un artiste (Paris 1881), who refers to "the draftsman's boldness, the oriental quality of his compositions" and notes "the attribution of a contemporary handwriting on the old frame", which has now disappeared.
