Engraved and stained ivory token box (Elephantidae spp*), si - Lot 230
Engraved and stained ivory token box (Elephantidae spp*), signed on the inside of the lid. Mariaval le jeune de Paris fecit. Paris, circa 1730. The lid adorned with mother-of-pearl medallions (Turbo marmoratus and Pinctada margaritifera), the central one engraved with a woman and a bird, surrounded by vegetal motifs, the interior engraved with a painting of a city animated by a fisherman, the other side engraved with a putto with the inscription "Avec le temps", (chips missing, ivory missing at hinge, small scratches). Dimensions: 90 x 63 mm. This box is part of a group of 18th-century quadrille game boxes signed by the artisan-tabletier Mariaval le Jeune (active circa 1720-1760), who seems to have had two workshops: one in Paris and another in Rouen, as attested by the four boxes in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (inv. BK-NM-624-A, B, C and D). *Ivory specimen of Elephantidae spp (I/A) pre-Convention, prior to July 1, 1947 and therefore compliant with EC regulation 338/97 of 09/12/1996 art.2-W SCE and SPMC, and prior to July 1, 1975 and therefore compliant with the French decrees of May 4, 2017 and January 2022. A CITES re-export permit is required for export from the European Union. This lot is accompanied by a CIC issued on 18/12/2025.
