Patinated terra cotta figure of La France victorieuse, on a - Lot 146
Patinated terra cotta figure of La France victorieuse, on a later gilded wood base. Attributed to Barthélémy Verboeckhoven, known as Fickaert (1754 - 1840). Circa 1785. H: 42.5 cm, W: 42.5 cm, D: 17 cm. Base, H: 7.5 cm, W: 42.5 cm, D: 20.5 cm. Provenance : Sale Paris, Rabourdin et Choppin de Janvry, March 21, 1994, lot 53. Bibliographical reference: P. Sorel, "Trois sculptures de l'époque révolutionnaire : propositions d'attributions", in Gazette des Beaux-Arts, October 1990, pp. 137-143. The iconography of victorious France takes up several attributes of the goddess Minerva, with the addition of a fleur-de-lys surmounting a globe. This fi gure has a number of features in common with the Monument à la gloire de Necker, signed and dated 1789, in the Musée Carnavalet (inv. S1766). Fickaert trained for part of his career in Augustin Pajou's workshop in Paris, before moving into a style representative of the early neoclassical period in Flanders. A very similar fi gure from the former collection of Albéric Froissart (sale Paris, étude de Maigret December 13, 2023, lot 44) shows great similarities in subject, composition and size, suggesting that it was originally arranged as a pair.
