After Paul GAUGUIN. - Lot 79
After Paul GAUGUIN. Hina and Te Fatou. Bronze proof with patina, lost wax C. Valsuani fondeur, numbered 1/6. H. without base: 32 cm. Post-mortem proof executed from a wood. An original woodcut exists in the former Daniel de Monfreid collection. According to Christopher Grey, there are at least two bronze series made from plaster. A letter from Gustave Fayet to Daniel de Monfreid in December 1900 states: "...As for molding the woods that belong to you, I offer you my ceramics workshop to mold them. It would cost you nothing... you would draw the proofs you want and we would break the molds...". Another bronze series was authorized by Madame Huc de Monfreid in Monfreid in 1959 and six were produced, including our proof... Bibliography: - Sculpture and Ceramics of Paul Gauguin, by Christopher Gray the wood is reproduced on page 222 as N°96.
