Rustam and Sohrâb. Safavid Iran, circa 1620. Polychrome gouache, gold and silver on a page from Ferdowsi's Shahnameh manuscript on paper. Text of 25 lines per page in nasta'liq script in black ink on 4 columns. The illustration covers almost the entire surface of the text, revealing four column sections. It depicts the hero Rostam mourning his son Sohrâb, kneeling before the man he has just recognized after stabbing him to death. Condition: page consolidated and glued to another manuscript page, paint chips, holes in leaf, blackened faces, blackened silver river.
