Gilles-Louis CHRETIEN (1745-1811)
J.G.Y. S.R. aide-de-camp of Mr. Lafayette. Drawn by Fouquet, engraved by Chretien, inventor of the physionotrace, Cloître St Honoré in Paris. Very nice proof slightly yellowed, some stains. Frame. Diameter : 6 cm. Chretien was the inventor in 1784 of the physionotrace, by which the shadow of the profile to be represented was projected on a transparent paper, then shifted and reduced by a process close to the Pantograph, and finally engraved with etching on a copper plate in miniature format.
