Saint Dominique. Drawing in sepia ink, signed lower right. 26 x 18 cm. Provenance : - Sale Hôtel Drouot, Paris, December 11, 1987, N°45 of the catalog. The Chapel of the Rosary (also known as the Matisse Chapel) was made by Henri Matisse for the Dominican Sisters. In 1947 the Dominican Sisters of Vence planned to build a chapel. In Vence, the Dominican Sisters had only an old garage as a chapel. 1948 marked the beginning of four years of exclusive work by Matisse for the chapel. In January the plans for the chapel were finalized. The construction was entrusted to the architect Louis Milon de Peillon under the high authority of Auguste Perret. Four years of assiduous and exclusive work will be devoted by Matisse to the conception and realization of the chapel, conceived as a total work of art. In 1949, Matisse continued his preparatory work for the large drawings on ceramic and the stained glass windows. Matisse worked on a new version of the stained glass windows around the theme of the Tree of Life. He made numerous preparatory drawings for the panels of Saint Dominique, the Virgin and Child and the Way of the Cross. On December 12, the ceremony of the laying of the first stone by the bishop of Nice. Finally, at the beginning of 1950, the construction began and lasted one year.
