Maurice DENIS (1870 - 1943)
Brother Genever plays on the swing, ca. 1923. Oil on cardboard. 36 x 29 cm. Provenance: - Sold by the artist to R. Delmas in 1939. - Sale Paris, March 16, 2005, N°227 of the catalog. Exhibition : - Maurice Denis, Galerie Druet, Paris, March 10 - 21, 1924 (N° 39 to 47, nine illustrations for the Life of Frère Genièvre). Bibliography: - Archives of the Maurice Denis catalog raisonné index number 923.0038. We thank Claire Denis for the precious information she kindly gave us and who indicated that: The life of this naïve and holy companion of Saint Francis is recounted in a work that will be published in 1923 by Jacques Beltrand in a translation by André Pératé, with illustrations by Denis engraved on wood by the Beltrand brothers. For p. 23, Denis chose to use the left side of his 1914 painting, keeping the San Sebastiano gate in the background, framed by its two crenellated towers, and the "Osteria dei Carrettieri" (Inn of the Carters) on the left. The book contains nine full-page illustrations, for which the painter composed paintings, presumably to offer to bibliophiles: this would be the case for the one reproduced on the left [the one presented under this number].
