The Saint-Nicolas-Saint-Marc church in Ville-d'Avray is one of the few churches built during the Revolution. The first stone was laid on July 11, 1789 and the building was consecrated in 1791 by a constitutional priest. Historically, the church succeeded a first church of Saint-Nicolas of the 12th century, very dilapidated, which was destroyed in 1791 after the completion of the second. It was the lord of Ville-d'Avray, Baron Marc-Antoine Thierry, who financed the work (with funds provided by the King). In honor of his support, the sanctuary became Saint-Nicolas-Saint-Marc. In 1793, it was transformed into a temple of the Reason, then returned to the cult in 1795. Its style is neoclassical. Its interior decoration was done by famous artists who stayed in Villed'Avray (Camille Corot, James Pradier). Although of modest size, it has a rather imposing statuary... In 1849, Corot offers his Saint Jerome in the desert (in the nave on the left) then he undertakes in 1856 the decoration of the transept by frescoes: Adam and Eve chased out of Paradise (right transept), Madeleine in the desert (right transept), the Baptism of Christ (left transept), Christ in the Garden of Olives (left transept).
