COYPEL Charles (entourage de) 1694 -1752 - Lot 57
COYPEL Charles (entourage de) 1694 -1752 Portrait of a painter and man of letters (Charles Coypel?) He is shown holding the symbolic instruments of each of his arts, brush and pen. We can see behind him the back of two paintings, a box of colors, a palette hanging on the wall and books on a shelf. Oil on canvas (Reverse side) Captioned in Latin in the lower part NUNC. ARTIBUS. ISTIS: EXIGUAE. LUCRANTUR. OPES. H. 45-W. 36,5 cm The Latin motto placed under the portrait seems to underline the modesty of the wealth that the arts now bring. To be compared with the younger Charles Coypel's self-portrait in pastel, engraved by Jean-Joseph Bachelou (1719-1764) (Cf. Thierry Lefrançois, Charles Coypel, I.6A. p. 138. Arthena 1994)
