A gilt bronze and black patinated hanging... - Lot 204 - Doutrebente
A gilt bronze and black patinated hanging lamp representing two Amours disputing a heart in front of an aedicule forming a mirror, with Egyptian style pilasters and a frieze of butterflies. Enamel dial by LE ROY bordered with denticules, topped with a winged torch. Plate stamped LR, PF and numbered 260/4. Wire suspension. Empire period. H. 48 - L. 30 cm. Bezel attached to the back, slight oxidation and wear, the movement recently revised. Iconography: the group representing the two Loves is anonymous, it was formerly attributed to the brothers Nicolas and Joseph Broche (cf. Museum Carnavalet, inv. S3171). It represents Eros and his antagonistic brother, An_x0002_téros. References: the same clock was kept in the small boudoir of the Empress Josephine at Malmaison (see Paul Marmottant, "Le Style Empire", 1925, volume III, plate 22).
