Adam-Philippe, comte de CUSTINE (1740-1793) general, he comm - Lot 34
Adam-Philippe, comte de CUSTINE (1740-1793) general, he commanded the Army of the Rhine and then the Army of the North; he distinguished himself by defending Landau and taking Mainz and Frankfurt; after some setbacks, he was accused of having dealings with the enemy and guillotined. L.S., January 29, 1784; 1 1/2 pages in-4 (engraved portrait enclosed). He received M. de Fougeret de Villandry who had "everything I would like to meet", but his father ordered him to continue to follow his state. Custine asks his correspondent to find him "an excellent subject"... The Chevalier d'Oïré, an engineer officer, found him a subject in the school of Mézières, but he would prefer someone well trained "to raise a plan by sight", and "it would be only by losing the hope to find a similar one that I would decide to accept one to whom it would still remain to acquire"...
